When we first opened Ticho at the start of 2024 one of the key tenets we were committed to was bringing the world of wellness to the whole family.
The foundation of that, for us, was yoga.
Yoga Is One of the Best Things You Can Give Your Child
We all want to give our children the best start in life and that goes beyond which school they go to or the material things we may be able provide.
A strong sense of self. The ability to manage stress. A body that feels good to live in, a body they respect and look after – these are the real skills our kids need to survive and thrive in todays hyperconnected fast-paced world.
It’s harder than ever for young people to feel grounded, confident, and calm.
And that’s where yoga comes in.
At Ticho, we’ve seen firsthand how transformational yoga can be for children and teens. But, you don’t need to take our word for it, the science is beginning to agree with what yoga teachers have known for decades: that this ancient practice offers exactly the kind of support young people need in a world that often asks too much of them, too soon.
Science-Backed Benefits of Yoga for Children and Teens
- Improves Emotional Regulation and Reduces Anxiety
A growing number of studies show that yoga helps children regulate their emotions and reduce symptoms of anxiety. A 2021 review published in Child and Adolescent Mental Health found that school-based yoga programs led to significant improvements in psychological well-being, particularly in reducing stress and anxiety levels.
Yoga teaches children how to tune into their bodies and breath—tools they can carry with them when life feels overwhelming. In the pressure cooker of modern childhood (exams, social comparison, online visibility), this kind of inner resource is gold.
- Boosts Focus and Cognitive Function
Yoga doesn’t just support emotional health—it helps with academic performance, too. Mindfulness and movement-based practices like yoga have been shown to improve focus, working memory, and executive function. A study from Harvard Medical School found that regular yoga practice in teens enhanced attention span and improved classroom behaviour.
For children juggling schoolwork, screens, and social dynamics, yoga offers a way to slow down, re-centre, and access the clarity that can get lost in the noise.
- Builds Confidence and a Strong Sense of Self
We know that self-esteem can take a serious hit in adolescence—especially in the era of social media, where comparison is constant. Yoga provides a space where children can connect with their bodies without judgement or competition. It’s not about being the best or winning; it’s about noticing how you feel, breathing through challenges, and celebrating progress.
This helps build a quieter, deeper kind of confidence—the kind that doesn’t need external validation.
- Encourages Healthy Habits That Last a Lifetime
Yoga introduces children to a holistic view of health that includes rest, breath, movement, and presence. When young people learn to listen to their bodies and respond with kindness and awareness, they’re more likely to carry those habits into adulthood.
Plus, yoga is inherently inclusive. You don’t need to be sporty, flexible, or competitive to join in. It meets you exactly where you are—whether you’re six or sixteen.
A Screen-Free Sanctuary
We all know what a battle it can be to get our kids off their screens.
Yoga provides a rare opportunity to disconnect.
Not only does yoga offer an embodied, real-world experience that pulls children out of the virtual world and into the present moment, it also calms the nervous system in a way that directly counters the over-stimulation time in front a screen can bring.
In our classes at Ticho, we often see children arrive distracted, fidgety, or unsure. By the end of a session, they’re calmer. Quieter. Smiling. There’s something magical that happens when a child learns to find stillness—especially in a world that almost never asks them to.
A Space to Grow
Our kids and teen yoga classes are designed to support your child at every stage of their development.
They’re playful and fun, but also thoughtful and nourishing. We honour the physical, emotional, and mental needs of children as they grow, and we create an environment where they feel safe to explore movement, breath, and self-awareness.
Our teen classes are more like our regular classes, no experience is necessary. They are designed and created for the age group but approach the practice in a more ‘grownup’ way then our children’s classes.
They also include valuable tools for managing the stresses and pressures that come with being a teenager today.
